Political war of words erupts after panchayat election celebrations

Himachal minister and BJP clash over religious slogans after local election results

A political controversy has started in Himachal Pradesh after Revenue and Horticulture Minister Jagat Singh Negi criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for using religious slogans during celebrations following local body and panchayat election victories. His remarks triggered strong reactions from BJP leaders, leading to a fresh exchange of accusations between the ruling Congress government and the opposition BJP.

The debate began after BJP supporters reportedly raised "Jai Shri Ram" slogans while celebrating their success in several panchayat and urban local body elections. Negi said that elections should be celebrated as democratic victories and not linked with religion. According to him, local elections are contests between candidates and should not be turned into religious events.

The BJP, however, strongly rejected his criticism. Party leaders accused Negi of making unnecessary allegations and said that the slogan "Jai Shri Ram" represents faith, culture and tradition for millions of people across India. The party also accused the Congress government of trying to divert attention from its political setbacks.

The disagreement has now become part of a larger political battle between the Congress and BJP in Himachal Pradesh, with both sides using recent election results to attack each other.

Dispute over election celebrations

Speaking to the media, Jagat Singh Negi expressed concern over the use of religious slogans during victory celebrations. He said that panchayat elections are fought by individual candidates and not on the basis of religion.

Negi stated that democratic victories should be celebrated with respect for the public mandate. According to him, bringing religion into election celebrations is inappropriate and may weaken the democratic spirit of elections.

He also disagreed with the BJP's claim that the recent panchayat elections were a "semi-final" before the next Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections.

Negi pointed out that panchayat elections are not fought on official party symbols. Therefore, he argued that it would be wrong to treat the results as a direct political victory for any party.

The minister further criticised the BJP for demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. He questioned BJP leaders and asked why they had allegedly tried to bring down an elected government in the past.

Negi also referred to previous by-elections in which the BJP suffered defeats. He said that if election losses are grounds for resignation, then BJP leaders should explain why no resignations were demanded after those defeats.

The Congress leader also highlighted some recent successes for his party. According to him, Congress candidates have won important positions in urban local bodies in Chamba and Chuwari after many years. These areas have traditionally been considered BJP strongholds.

Negi said these victories show that Congress still enjoys public support in several parts of the state. He accused the BJP of trying to take credit for election results that do not directly reflect party-based contests.

His comments quickly became a major political issue and attracted responses from several senior BJP leaders.

BJP hits back strongly

The BJP strongly criticised Negi's statements and accused him of making baseless allegations.

BJP chief spokesperson Rakesh Jamwal said that Negi was frustrated because of Congress's weakening political position in Himachal Pradesh. He claimed that the minister was trying to remain politically relevant by targeting the BJP.

Jamwal said there was nothing wrong with chanting "Jai Shri Ram" during celebrations. According to him, Lord Ram represents faith, values, culture and traditions that are respected by millions of Indians.

He argued that the slogan does not belong to any political party and should not be viewed through a political lens. Jamwal further stated that objecting to such slogans reflects a misunderstanding of their cultural significance.

The BJP leader also accused the Congress government of trying to create unnecessary controversies instead of focusing on governance and public welfare.

Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur also entered the debate. He criticised Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and accused him of trying to hide the government's failures.

Speaking at a programme organised to honour newly elected representatives of panchayati raj institutions and urban local bodies, Thakur said the Congress government was attempting to present a false picture of political success.

He claimed that the recent election results had exposed weaknesses within the ruling party.

Thakur specifically referred to Hamirpur district, which is considered the home district of Chief Minister Sukhu. He alleged that Congress had performed poorly even in areas closely associated with the chief minister.

According to Thakur, a leader who could not secure strong results in his own region should not claim victory across the entire state.

The BJP leader further argued that the election outcomes demonstrated growing support for his party among voters.

The exchange of statements highlights the intense political rivalry between the Congress government and the BJP in Himachal Pradesh. While both parties are interpreting local election results differently, the debate has expanded beyond electoral performance to include issues of religion, political messaging and public perception.

Political observers believe that the controversy reflects the early stages of preparations for future elections in the state. Both parties are trying to strengthen their support base and shape public opinion long before the next Assembly elections.

For now, the dispute over victory celebrations and religious slogans continues to dominate political discussions in Himachal Pradesh. While Congress leaders insist that democratic events should remain separate from religious symbolism, BJP leaders maintain that cultural expressions such as "Jai Shri Ram" are a natural part of public celebrations and should not be politicised.

As political tensions continue, the controversy has once again highlighted the sharp differences between the state's two major political parties and their competing visions of public and political life.
